Hope Cottage News

Volume 2 Issue 2 April 2000

Back to Normal!

We are now in what we have come to consider the "normal" time of year. Christmas is past, the weather is getting warmer and the numbers are increasing. The cold and messy weather of winter has a noticeable effect on the ability of our older people to get out. We have been bringing the people inside on the bad weather days, a luxury we now have over the old Cottage.

We are almost settled in our new office, which is really quite spectacular. We now have a new (to us) computer thanks to a donation from Hope Community Enterprises. Hope Community Enterprises is a non-profit community economic development corporation started by the Social Justice Network of the Archdiocese to create small enterprises in Halifax. It is the parent company of Street Feat, Atlantic Canada's only street newspaper. We offer a big thank you to Harley Kierns for getting our computer up and running.

(Harley is presently working in our office setting up three additional computers to be donated to inner city kids. We have already given away 6 computers through this program). We are now awaiting the installation of our printer, also from HCE. Last month we obtained a fax machine (429 0672).

Lastly we are awaiting a part for a re-conditioned photocopier. We received a board table just before Christmas, and a couple of additional filing cabinets. This office space, along with the dining area and chapel has allowed us to host a couple of weekend meetings. The first couple of meetings have worked relatively well, prompting us to continue the practice. These meetings, mostly on weekends, will provide additional income to fund the operation. We are also pleased that Halifax Particular Council, the parent of Hope Cottage, has held a number of their monthly meetings at Hope Cottage. It is truly an honor for us to have HPC with us.

The additional computer equipment has allowed us to become better organized. We have now found all the important information and have set up data bases for our benefactors, our supper groups and volunteers. We appreciate that our chaos has caused some problems with a number of our supper groups, but we assure you that we are almost back on track, and that the supper group schedules should be available well in advance in the future. In conclusion we thank you all for your continued support, and invite you to drop in and visit with us if you are in the neighborhood. We would really love to see you.

Open House at
Hope Cottage A Success

The staff and Board of Directors of Hope Cottage hosted an Open House on Saturday February 26, 2000. The event started with a celebration of Mass at St. Patrick’s Church. Fr. George Leach, Sacramental Minister of St. Patrick’s, and Hope Cottage Board Member presided at the celebration of the Eucharist. After Mass approximately 60 people visited Hope Cottage, many for the first time. (Mass is celebrated weekly at Hope Cottage at 11:15 on Thursdays - everyone is welcome).

One of our regulars passed away

William "Bill" Forrestall passed away on Feb. 21, 2000 at the age of 53. Born in Halifax, he was the son of Alonzo and Margaret Forrestall.
His wife Heather, his stepsons Steven and Jason along with the rest of his family, mourn the loss of this good man. He worked as a crossing guard for the city of Halifax at St. Patrick’s and Joseph Howe schools on Gottingen St. Along with his work, he also worked as a volunteer on Sunday afternoons at the Sharing and Caring Club at the Bloomfield Centre.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Society.
Staff Notes:

Eddie Hollett

Eddie is the latest addition to the staff of Hope Cottage. He started as a part-time employee this time last year and has been full-time since June 1999.

Eddie brings a unique and valuable background and training to the cottage. Eddie is a recovering addict (cocaine) who is 7 years clean Feb. 23, 2000. He is also trained and has worked as a counselor. As a result of Eddie’s background and training, Hope Cottage will be starting up a Recovery Group and counseling sessions. These will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays. Eddie has three children, Christopher 16, Jeffery 13 and Katie 10 and a wonderful partner Stephanie. He loves sports and works out every day. He especially enjoys boxing, running, squash and badminton.
